"Mabel!" Dominic grinned, holding out his arms to his date for the day as she entered the diner. She laughed and shook her head, allowing Dominic to take her by the hand and press his lips to it.
"Oh, you," she protested, waving her hands dismissively, "such a charmer."
"You want to sit in a booth or at the counter?"
"Booth," she proclaimed after a beat.
"Whadda ya think?" Dominic asked, brow furrowed as he studied his menu after a tall redhead (who was, according to her name tag, named Lois) brought them to their booth. "What's good here, Mabel?" It had been her idea to share their meal at this particular diner and Dominic hoped that she could direct him to something unforgettable.
"Everything here at Avon's is amazing," she answered, fishing her glasses out of her purse and putting them on, "but I like it because they serve breakfast all day, so if you ask me for a recommendation I will have to insist you try something along those lines."
"Groovy," he grinned.
"Their pancakes are better than sex, too. Just so you know."
"Mabel, stop talking like that or else I may have to propose here and now."
"What? It's just the truth. Aww, look at you, so cute when you blush! You remind me of my late husband. He had a smile that could light up this city like you wouldn't believe." Her eyes took on a faraway look for a beat, a moment of sadness prevailing, then the moment passed. Dominic had definitely witnessed it, though and had to bite back a frown.
"Anyway," she said brightly, "having said all that, I think this time I'm gonna go with a burger. A greasy, bacony, cheesy burger. Hell, you only live once. Special occasion, after all, yes?"
"Absolutely!"
In the end Mabel had ordered just what she had threatened to, along with a huge pile of french fries and a vanilla milkshake. Dominic went with a massive platter of pancakes, scrambled eggs, hash browns and bacon, with buttered wheat toast on the side.
"So," she said, dipping one of her fries in ketchup, "precisely how shocked were you when you saw that I won you at that auction thingy?"
"I was a little surprised, sure! But it was for such a good cause that I was pretty much up for anything! Though I have to ask," Dominc paused, a forkful of eggs half way to his mouth, "why me? I mean, not that I'm not flattered-"
"Hester dared me to, and there was no way I was gonna bow down to that little bitch. I showed her!"
Dominic choked on his eggs. Mabel was fantastic.
He wondered if she and Matthew would get along. Then he promptly wondered why that particular thought had entered his mind in the first place.
"And honestly," she continued, "you looked like fun, and I really could use someone to talk to and spend some time with. An old bitty like me gets lonely now and then. I have my friends, yes, but well... it's nice to shake things up sometimes! Although, I do hope it's alright that I'm not really a fan of that disco music you like so much."
Dominic's heart burst when Mabel used her hands to put air quotes around the word "disco"; she was lovely and sweet and cheeky as hell.
"That's okay! So, if not me, then who do you listen to on QBUT?"
"Matthew. I'm a big fan of The Other Side, it's just so... fascinating! There are some truly strange people in this world, you know? I mean, not Matthew himself, he's wonderful, and clearly so so intelligent. But," she glanced around and lowered her voice, "some of those people who call in are one egg short of a dozen if you get my meaning."
Dominic nodded seriously. "I would say... that you've got a pretty fair assessment going on there!"
They ate in a companionable silence for a while longer until Mabel broke the silence with a question.
"So, what's her name?"
Dominic put his fork down and looked around, confused. "Who? Oh, Lois? I'll get her if you need something-"
"No! I don't mean her, I mean the woman you spend your life with, silly boy!"
"Oh."
Mabel eyed him curiously, reaching for her napkin. "I'm sorry if I put my nose in where it doesn't belong."
"No, no," he gently corrected her, reaching out to touch her hand, "you didn't. It's okay." But still he didn't make a move to extend the conversation. He wasn't sure why, either. Mabel seemed trustworthy and Dominic certainly believed that she had a big heart, but something held him back from admitting opening up to her about this particular thing.
"Well," she said brightly, changing the subject, "how about that miniature golf now, yes?"
"Sure thing," Dominic replied with a smile.
* * * * *
"Are you cheating?!"
"Young man!" Mabel shouted with a stomp of her foot, "I resent that implication. Besides, if you hadn't been looking I would have gotten away with it!"
Dominic threw his head back and laughed, Mabel joining him after a beat. Their game of mini golf had been a close one until the end, when Mabel had pulled away with the victory. He watched then as she cocked her head and carefully putted, depositing the golf ball into the mouth of what could only be described as a large wooden squirrel.
"Take that, you badger!"
Or, a large wooden badger.
"It's a 'he'." Dominic blurted out as the two of them had turned in their golf clubs.
Mabel looked up at him, brow furrowed. "Wait, what?"
"It's not a 'she'."
His mouth went dry and he instantly regretted having made the admission. It was so hard though, for someone like him, to be able to find somebody he could confide in without fear of ridicule or worse, that it just slipped out in the presence of somebody so warm and kind. Why he'd latched onto Mabel like he had remained a mystery and he could only hope now that he hadn't made a huge mistake; he cast his eyes downward and sighed.
"Ohhh," she said softly, reaching out to raise his eye level to her own, "I see."
Dominic still had trouble meeting her gaze.
"Listen to me. Love," she whispered, "is a poweful thing, no matter how it presents itself, Dominic. If you've found it, then you're a lucky man, so very lucky. And I am exceedingly happy for you."
"I don't know if I've found it for certain though. But, I know that I want to... and I know that I want to find it with someone like... him."
"The he's an equally lucky man, whoever he is. But, please don't tell me it's that idiot from the station with that ridiculous afro on top of his head."
Dominic smiled despite himself. "No, no, it's not him." Mabel hooked her arm through his own, Dominic holding her purse in his right hand as they began to walk back uptown.
"So, this mystery man. Does he share your feelings?"
Scenes from the almost-kiss he'd shared with Matthew began to flash in his mind while he considered her question. Dominic likened it to a tough mathematical problem, really. Take the fact that Matthew had rested his head against Dominic's shoulder at the planetarium last week and multiply it by the fact that he'd, at one point, squeezed Dominic's trembling hand and divide it by the fact that Matthew had initiated their good night kiss to the cheek and you got...
...
... well, he didn't really know what the answer was. Not yet, at least.
"Well, I'm not certain. I think... that he might?"
She nodded. "Okay, good. This is good."
"Is it?"
"Of course it's good!"
"I wish I had your confidence," the DJ smiled, holding tight to Mabel's arm.
"Darling boy, you have to take a chance now and then in life."
"I know. It's just a little scary sometimes."
"It's scary all of the time, that's what makes it so exciting."
Dominic turned to her. "How'd you get to be so damn wise?" He yelped when Mabel slapped his ass playfully.
"You live as long as I do, boy, and you learn a few things about life! By the way, have you ever been felt up by an 83 year old woman?"
"Not until now," he winked.
"Groovy," she grinned. "That's a first class ass you've got there."
Once they'd returned to Avon's Dominic had insisted on driving her back to the retirement home where she lived but she would have none of it, proclaiming that bus travel was the best way to see the city. Once they'd returned to Mabel's bus stop they exchanged phone numbers with the promise to keep in touch. Dominic wanted to take her to Gunther's sometime and introduce her to G and Maddy; he had a feeling they would get along swimmingly.
Before she released his hand she leaned in and kissed his cheek. "Remember. Taking chances are a good thing. Go find this mystery man because the next time we speak I want lots of dirty gossip, you hear me?"
"You got it, gorgeous girl," he replied with a happy smile. "Thank you. I had... an amazing time today." He hugged her again and they parted ways, Dominic still waving as the city bus drove out of sight.
So, that was how Dominic found himself at Matthew's door later that night, a bottle of Dr. Pepper (adorned with an oversized yellow bow) behind his back. He stood there for about five minutes or so before he finally got the nerve up to knock, and he actually jumped back in surprise as the door opened instantly and Matthew's smiling face emerged from behind it.
"I was wondering how long you were going to stand out here."
"You saw me?"
"I did."
"Man, and here I thought I was being slick," Dominic groaned.
"You want me to go back in and we can have a do-over?"
"What?"
"A do-over!"
"For real?"
Matthew nodded. "Yeah, hold on. I'll go back inside and you can knock like you walked up to my door without a care in the world. Yeah?"
Dominic smiled; the notion was incredibly silly but also so sweet that there was no way he wouldn't play along with it. He nodded. "Okay, do it. Totally!" Once Matthew was safely ensconced in his apartment again Dominic knocked three times on the door and after a beat it opened.
"Dominic! Oh my stars, what a lovely surprise," Matthew purred, eyes wide in mock shock.
"Hello, good sir. I come bearing gifts." With a dramatic flourish he presented Matthew with the bottle of Dr. Pepper, the talk show host bursting out in laughter. He accepted the gift and bowed, positively beaming at Dominic.
"Come in, yeah?"
And Dominic did.
"Have a seat," Matthew offered in a friendly voice, "and put this in the fridge, yeah?"
"Okay," Dominic smiled. He tried to calm his nerves and decided to take in his surroundings. Matthew's apartment was spacious, yet simply furnished.
"So," Matthew said, breaking the silence. He sat down next to the DJ.
"So."
Dominic wondered if he was imagining things because for a moment he thought that perhaps Matthew had scooted a little closer to him on the couch. Just as he decided that his fevered, overexcited brain was just playing tricks on him, he felt Matthew's outer thigh press against his own.
"I hope it's okay that I just showed up like this."
"Of course it is," Matthew replied, "I'm thrilled you did. Although now we have to decide what we're going to do now."
"Whatever you want," Dominic answered. "We can just sit here and talk, really. Would you like that?" The DJ was exceedingly pleased with himself so far this evening; he was on top of his game and was keeping as cool as possible. With a toothy grin he let his hand creep over to rest on Matthew's knee, squeezing it.
Matthew didn't reply straightaway. Instead he simply stared at Dominic's hand on his leg, blinking.
"Would I like that," he repeated slowly. He turned to the blond then, his eyes dark. "Do you really want to know what I'd like?"
Dominic swallowed when their eyes met, the dark, glittering blue before him leaving him breathless. He nodded.
Matthew was quick as lightning as he launched himself into Dominic's arms, kissing him hotly.
Dominic was shocked but pleased, and responded eagerly. It had been so long since he'd been in another man's arms and the sensation threatened to overwhelm him completely. Matthew's lips were everywhere at once it seemed and Dominic didn't want it to end, ever. However, it was with a fevered gasp that Matthew released his mouth; he tore the DJ's shirt open in one fluid motion, the blond gaping as he watched the buttons fly through the air.
"Look at you. Fucking look at you," the talk show host growled.
"My shirt!" Dominic exclaimed, his protests devolving into low moans as the man in his arms bit down gently on one of his nipples. Suddenly the loss of his lime green button-down wasn't that important. "Oh, fuck, that's good."
"I'd like," Matthew went on, licking a stripe up Dominic's neck, "to fuck you so hard," he sucked the blond's earlobe into his mouth, "that you can't sit for a week without remembering it."
