"Wake up, glitteryarse," Dominic whispered, that ever-present grin firmly in place.
Matthew yawned and stretched. "Hi," he whispered in kind, throwing one arm over his eyes.
"Happy birthday."
"That makes three times you've wished me happy birthday today."
"True. I'm just doing it again. I will be doing it many more times before the day is over, too. Birthdays are special!"
The corners of Matthew's lips turned upwards, ever so slightly; his arm fell away from his face so he could pull Dominic closer with it. "Thank you. You've spoiled me today."
The spoiling in question had been in the way that Dominic had indulged Matthew's whims today. When asked what he wanted most for his birthday, Matthew had commented that all he wanted was a day alone with Dominic - a day to just be with each other, devoid of Muse responsibilities and outside distractions. Their morning had started in true birthday fashion, with shower sex - complete with Matthew wearing a paper birthday hat, on Dominic's insistence. They'd followed that with breakfast, and they'd followed that by curling up in bed with a few episodes of The X-Files. Birthday cupcakes, which Dominic had ordered specifically for the occasion, had been delivered in the meantime, and Chris had called to wish Matthew a happy birthday, along with the Wolstenfamily.
"How was your nap?" Dominic asked, pressing kisses to the corner of Matthew's mouth.
"Would have been better if you'd napped with me."
"You know I'm not a napper. Never have been."
"Still, we could have tested my theory. I still say that with just one legendary Matt Bellamy handjob," Matthew humped his hips three times, Dominic laughing, "I could have rocked your world so hard that you'd have had no choice but to collapse and sleep the sleep of the dead with me. It would have been the birthday nap to end all birthday naps."
"Legendary Matt Bellamy handjob? You make it sound like you're known worldwide for them."
"Well, maybe I should be," Matthew grinned, "you seem to be a fan of them."
"Oh, Jesus, just what the world needs," Dominic groaned, "for your head to get even bigger than it already is."
"Which head are we talking about here?"
"I can see it now, someday your biography will be titled The Hand That Jerked A Thousand Dicks."
"Touching, isn't it? And it can go on the bookshelf right next to yours, which will no doubt be called The Hand That Sampled A Thousand Moisturizers."
They both giggled, falling into each others arms for what ended up being a nearly hour-long makeout session. Eventually, the need for air forced them to part, and they found themselves laying on the bed, eating cupcakes.
"I want to take you somewhere later on tonight," Dominic said suddenly. "Will you let me?"
Matthew licked frosting from his fingertips. "Where?"
"Well, it's kind of a secret."
"Ooh, secret-y."
"There is a catch..." Dominic admitted. "How do you feel about being blindfolded-"
Matthew's eyes lit up.
"In a non sexual fashion, I should stress."
Matthew pouted for a beat, then nodded his assent. He had no idea what Dominic had planned, but he was willing to go along with it for his sake. Indeed, at this point in their lives, Matthew reckoned he would never ever be able to deny Dominic anything ever again.
They waited until about eleven that night to put the plan into motion. Once Matthew was in the passenger seat of Dominic's car, he allowed himself to be blindfolded. The ride to their destination was silent, and Dominic kept one hand on Matthew's knee when it wasn't on the gear shift.
It didn't take very long for them to arrive at their destination, Dominic helping Matthew out of the car and guiding his steps for what felt like forever. The night air was just a bit chilly, and Matthew could hear the sea in the distance.
"Wanted to do this late as possible so we could perhaps have a bit of privacy," Dominic commented. "Okay, sit down."
Matthew obeyed, his arse hitting a cool, hard surface. He heard the sound of a wrapper being torn.
"Are you ready?"
"Yeah."
Dominic removed the blindfold and Matthew squinted as his eyes adjusted to his surroundings. Realization began to flood his senses and he gasped, eyes wide, lips parting in shock.
"Hey," Dominic said quietly, "want some?"
Matthew knew that Dominic was offering him part of a Galaxy bar before he even looked down and saw it for himself. He accepted his half and broke a piece off, popping it into his mouth.
He lost himself in memory momentarily.
The spot on the bench at The Den had always been Matthew's favorite, so Dominic knew exactly where to find him.
"What happened?"
Matthew shook his head, running his fingers through his long hair. "Just an argument with mum. The usual. I had hoped that maybe we could get through my birthday without arguing about the band again. Apparently not."
"Shit, I'm sorry."
"It's okay. I'm used to it, mostly."
"You shouldn't have to be used to it, though."
Matthew shrugged.
"We're getting out of this shithole, Matt," Dominic said, staring out at the water. "I'm telling you here and now, it's gonna happen. We're gonna make it, you and Chris and I, and everyone else can go and get fucked."
Matthew wiped his eyes with the back of his hand, sniffling.
"And when we do, one day, years from now, we'll come back here and look back on this moment. All the misery you're feeling right now will be such a distant memory, yeah?"
Matthew looked at his friend with red-rimmed eyes. "You seem so certain. Like you know, for a fact, that we'll be successful. How do you do that?"
"I believe in us," Dominic replied, putting his hand on Matthew's back for a moment. Matthew wiped his eyes again and then closed them for a moment in an attempt to ease the pounding in his head. "Hey, want some?" He opened his eyes to see Dominic offering him half of his Galaxy bar. Matthew accepted it, and there, the two of them ate in a companionable silence.
"I told you we'd come back," Dominic whispered, smoothing back the hair from Matthew's brow.
Matthew looked into his eyes and shook his head. "You remembered that?" he whispered.
"Of course I do."
"I reckoned you'd forgotten about it. When we played The Den, I thought about it then but just filed it away as a memory."
"I thought about it then, too, but I wanted to save this for a moment you wouldn't be expecting it. For a moment where we could really look back and take stock of our lives." Dominic turned to Matthew. "For a moment where I could look at you and tell you how proud I am of you... of what you, Chris, and I have accomplished. I don't think back then I would have believed it if someone had told me I would love you as completely as I do, Matt. You're so bloody precious to me. Your birthday signifies yet another year with you in my life, and for that I'm thankful to a higher power that I'm not sure I even believe in. It's your birthday, but as cheesy as it sounds, I feel like I'm the one who gets the gift."
Matthew stared at Dominic, overcome with affection. "Maybe," he whispered, "we get to share the gift, yeah?" He reached for Dominic's hand and brought it to his lips, kissing the knuckles, then Dominic's cheek, then his lips. "I don't know if anyone has ever called me precious. Back then, I had hoped that someday you would be the one to do it, but I never dreamed I'd get this lucky."
Dominic was stunned. "What? Even then, you...? Really?"
"I've never wanted anybody else, Dom."
Dominic stood, pulling Matthew up abruptly. "Wait, we just got here, what are you doing?"
"Getting you home, so you can really get lucky, birthday boy."
Getting Lucky had exhausted them both, and it was nigh on midnight when they finally began to wind down properly for the day. Matthew was already in bed, eating the last of his cupcakes and getting crumbs everywhere, as was typical.
"I have a gift for you," Dominic announced.
"What? I don't need a gift, I thought we agreed that a day with you was my gift-"
Dominic tossed a small, rectangular shaped box at Matthew, then put his hands in the air. "Just open it," he laughed, climbing into bed.
"Thank you," Matthew said suddenly, "for today, I mean. For everything. For putting up with me. For being my best friend. For loving me. For, um, y'know... all the awesome sex."
"Truly poetic, Matthew. Truly."
"I love you," Matthew said with pure, pristine honesty.
"And, I love you...but..." Dominic replied, the two of them sharing a kiss while Matthew's fingers opened his gift, "... I also wanted to say..." he looked into the box and saw a shiny, brand new pair of scissors, then looked at Dominic, eyebrow raised.
"...it's time, Matthew. Cut. Your fucking. Hair."
